CIS Controls Community Volunteer Spotlight: Shane Markley
The CIS Critical Security Controls® (CIS Controls®) Community constitutes a group of highly skilled volunteers who contribute immensely to the global cybersecurity landscape. These individuals come from a diverse array of backgrounds ranging from cybersecurity experts, IT professionals, researchers, and educators. They dedicate their expertise and time for the greater good of cybersecurity by helping organizations protect themselves from prevalent cyber threats.
Shane Markley, Senior Systems Engineer at Palo Alto Networks, has been a CIS Controls Community member since 2020 and a volunteer since 2016. However, he’s been working with the CIS Controls for more than a decade.
Markley has actively contributed to the CIS Controls on multiple initiatives, including CIS Controls v8 mapping to Criminal Justice Information Services, the CIS Controls Industrial Control Systems (ICS) Companion Guide (which has since been updated to Controls v8.1), and Controls/Palo Alto Networks portfolio product mapping. He has also written blogs and participated in various webinars around the CIS Controls.
“The CIS Critical Security Controls is one of my favorite frameworks. I believe it to be one of the simplest yet most robust,” said Markley. “The resources and mappings that are available and constantly updated are also extremely beneficial.”
He added, “I have leveraged the CIS Community both from a practitioner perspective as well as a vendor perspective, and it has been beneficial on both sides of the fence.”
Markley has enjoyed collaborating with CIS staff and other CIS Community members over the years and says “it has definitely been a great learning and professional development experience.”
“For those who want to get more intimate with the CIS Critical Security Controls, I would recommend checking out the SANS GIAC Critical Controls Certification (GCCC) course and certification.”
