The Center for Internet Security, Inc. (CIS®) is mourning the loss of Amit Yoran, a deeply respected and beloved member of the CIS Board of Directors who passed away on January 3, 2025.

Amit joined the CIS Board of Directors in 2019 and led the board’s strategic planning efforts. He was also instrumental in advancing cybersecurity across the globe through his leadership and expertise in both government and industry roles. Most recently, Amit served as chairman and chief executive officer of cybersecurity powerhouse Tenable, Inc. Amit also previously served as president of RSA and founding director of the National Cyber Security Division within the Department of Homeland Security.

“Amit was an icon in the cybersecurity space. He was one of those unique individuals who commanded the attention of leaders and experts alike when he spoke,” said CIS President and CEO John Gilligan. “Amit’s contributions to CIS and the cybersecurity community will be sorely missed, and his legacy will live on in the many institutions and industries that he influenced for the better.”

During his tenure at the Department of Homeland Security, Amit provided the initial funding for the newly established Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center® (MS-ISAC®), and he tasked it to improve the cybersecurity of state, local, tribal, and territorial (SLTT) organizations. Today, his initial vision has resulted in the MS-ISAC having over 18,000 SLTT member organizations and making significant contributions to improved security for government organizations, including the elections community. CIS is proud to have been able to operate the MS-ISAC since 2010.

“Amit’s remarkable generosity, coupled with his intellect, wit, and vision, profoundly influenced our industry,” said Bobbie Stempfley, CIS Board Chair. “His contributions to CIS and the broader cybersecurity community leave an enduring legacy, one that will continue to resonate through the individuals and organizations he supported with such dedication. It was a privilege to know him and to work alongside him. His absence will be deeply felt, but the legacy he leaves behind will continue to guide and inspire many.”

The CIS Board of Directors and leadership team extend their deepest sympathies to Amit’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult period.
