The CIS community is comprised of several thousand IT security subject matter experts (SMEs) who are working in industry, government, and academia. We dedicate time and effort to develop and maintain the CIS security configuration Benchmarks and security Metrics definitions, which in turn are distributed free of charge worldwide.
Some SMEs are paid contractors who fulfill essential roles in the CIS community projects, but the vast majority are volunteers who participate to share their expertise for the greater good of the Internet community, and to learn from the many others who do the same.
More than 170 individuals and organizations are also CIS Members. Their financial investment provides the funding that sustains CIS and its community projects.
The consensus-based resources developed by volunteer SMEs are distributed free of charge to the Internet community via the CIS web site. Some additional resources, such as CIS-CAT and benchmarks with enriched content in machine-readable format, are developed by paid contractors at the behest of CIS Members, with no involvement by community volunteers. These resources are distributed only to CIS members via the Members web site.
